Northvail School Counseling Program

Rationale and Overview

The philosophy of the school counseling program in the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District is based on the recognition of the dignity and worth of the individual. The mission is to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. Our school counseling program, based on the National Standards of the American School Counseling Association and aligned with the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards and the NJ Career Education and Life Skills Standards, provides the necessary elements for all students to achieve success in school and in life. School counselors are professional school advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement. In partnership with other educators, parents or guardians and the community, school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure all students in the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills to contribute at their highest level as productive members of society.

Program Management and Operation

On the elementary level, much time is spent in consultation with parents and staff members in an attempt to help the adults learn ways to help the children succeed. These can be informal meetings or the more official meetings of the Intervention & Referral Services, comprised of the principal, the school counselor, a representative from the Child Study Team, the reading specialist and another teacher. Background information is sought from the nurse and various specialists. Along with the classroom teacher and the parents, when possible, the I. & R.S.. comes up with strategies to help the child succeed here at Northvail.

Much time is also spent in classroom guidance activities. This could be part of the long-established curriculum, celebration of Red Ribbon Week or School Counseling Week, or in response to a particular need of a class or grade level. Our wonderful 5th grade Peacemaker program is the culmination of the developmental guidance curriculum.

School counselors are part of the team dedicated to success; success for children in school and in life.
