The last year of Northvail offers students many exciting opportunities and privileges. A big emphasis in fifth grade is allowing students to become more independent learners and take more responsibility for their education. Social Studies
The units that will be covered in Social Studies are:
- Geography – What is geography and why is it important in the life of each student?
- Exploration and Settlement of the New World – Who influenced the Western World and why were their contributions important?
- United States Government – Why was there a need for a national government in the United States?
- A Growing America (Reform and Change) – How did America evolve and change through expansion, immigration, industrialization, and urbanization?
Reading
Students will be participating in a Reader’s Workshop Program allowing them to grow as readers and analyze different types of text. The units that are covered are as follows:
- Unit 1: Interpretation Book Clubs – Analyzing Themes
- Unit 2: Tackling Complexity – Moving Up Level of Nonfiction
- Unit 3: Argument and Advocacy – Researching Debatable Ideas
- Unit 4: Fantasy Book Clubs – The Magic of Themes & Symbols
Students will develop the necessary skills in order to read independently and respond to reading by demonstrate understanding of a selection.
Writing
In fifth grade, students are exposed to several different types of writing styles and begin to develop their own person writing ‘voice.’ The main areas that are focused on are:

- Research Based Writing
Students are expected to write 5-paragraph essays with proper formatting (Introduction, Body Paragraphs, Conclusion)
