News from Mrs. Cobo’s K, 1st, 2nd Grade Class
Mrs. Cobo’s class has been preparing for Thanksgiving and learning lots of important words that describe this holiday, such as thankful, grateful, and gratitude. We worked together as a class to brainstorm what we are thankful for. Then, each student created their own Thankful Tree to be displayed in the hallway. This activity puts the little things in life in perspective, as we shared we are grateful for big things like our families and our house, all the way down to the little things like our shoes and a good book. Happy Thanksgiving!
News from Mrs. Nelson’s 4th & 5th Grade Class
The students of Mrs Nelson’s class have been delving into many aspects of social emotional learning this marking period! They started off the year by reading an all time favorite book called, The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. The class explored a number of literary skills such as identifying key details, understanding setting, making predictions and more. The students also analyzed the main characters in terms of what makes a bully and how can a person become an Upstander. The class learned the mistakes which the character Maddie made because she stood by and said nothing while her classmate Wanda, was being bullied. In reading the book and through many class discussions, the students learned a valuable lesson about speaking up and doing the right thing.
In other SEL news, the students have examined the following quote by Mason Quiroz, and taken it on as our motto for the year: “The World deserves to see and experience the gifts and talents you have to offer.” The students have been discussing and identifying their “gifts” which are some of their innermost, positive character traits. Here are some of the gifts the students have identified: a sense of humor, computer skills, honesty, kindness, helpfulness, sportsmanship, responsibility, and more...
News from Ms. Axt’s 3rd and 4th Grade Class
Gratitude Is The Best Attitude
Ms. Axt’s class has been focusing on appreciating what we are grateful for instead of worrying about what we do not have. To go along with this mindset, the class collaboratively made a Gratitude Wreath. Prior to this activity, we read a mentor text called, "A Little Thankful Spot", to help brainstorm ideas of what to write on the wreath’s leaves. The students came up with varied thoughts such as family, home, friends, pets, teachers, video games, warm sunshine, sand at the beach, snowmen, their bedroom, the playground, holidays, vacations and ice cream. They loved contributing their ideas to the wreath and are proud that it hangs on our classroom door.
