PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS

It has been an educational and enjoyable spring in our physical education program.  Throughout all levels, our students have continued working on both their stationary and fitness warm-up activities.  As students begin physical education class, they perform warm-up activities in their spots, followed by fitness warm-up activities around the gymnasium.  Currently, students in all grades but kindergarten lead the stationary warm-up activities, as each student chooses and leads their activity once or twice per week.  Leading the warm-up activities has helped the students develop responsibility, as well as the proper verbal terminology corresponding to these activities. In terms of fitness warm-up activities, students in the upper grades (3-5) have performed laps, “partner kickball”, “wasps”, “crazy cones”, rope jumping, and the pacer jog).  These students have also learned several different rope jumping patterns, and have consistently jumped to music during these warm-ups. The upper grade students have also finished a five-week basketball unit and a Project Adventure unit.  We have started the baseball unit, and will finish with the volleyball unit.  Skills in all units were developed and practiced with the use of partners, small groups, and large groups.

Our younger students (K-2) continue to perform jogging activities, “scrambled eggs”, “group statues”, “wall to wall movements” and “four corners”.  Students in the kindergarten, first grade, and second grade have developed their gross and fine motor skills with the use of several pieces of equipment, especially with the use of balls.  They have practiced just about every activity, including bouncing, rolling, kicking, throwing, catching, and striking.  Also, the younger grades have completed five dances up to now, which are the cha-cha slide, the cotton eye joe, the hokey pokey, the chicken dance, and the macarena.  Students are also looking forward to their annual Field Day and Olympic Day!  This culminating activity will help students practice their skills, develop good sportsmanship, work on teamwork, and most of all, have fun!!  I would like to thank our students for a wonderful spring, as we look forward to another fantastic end of the year in our physical education classes!  Have an active and safe summer!
